Meet Edy Castro, Art Curator for Castro Creates
Growing up on the gritty side of the Island instilled a determination to overcome difficult predicaments, and there were plenty of those back in the 1980's on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Starkly different from what we see today, the LES was its own world, immersed in disenchantment, broken buildings and hearts where many outsiders from other neighborhoods thought it was an unpleasant area, Edy saw hope in the art that adorned walls of public spaces identifying people's joy through their pain. "The city's walls served as my canvas, and the creativity of my community was the brush that painted my reality." As a founding member of the iconic TNS crew and a proud affiliate of RFC, two of New York City's most legendary graffiti collectives, "I've dedicated my life to the culture that has defined me," says Edy who is also known as Castro Curates NYC. In the summer of 2024, Edy curated her first group show called Hello Summer at Ultra Violet, featuring a collection of seven local NYC artists with versatile mediums from sculpting to graffiti art. The success of that show led to additional sponsorships and artists joining her collective propelling her forward in both confidence and talent. Since then she has curated FotoGraff, Sprung From La Tierra, AAPI Heritage Month, and Fotograff 2, with additional shows in the works. "Now, as I step into the role of curator, I'm driven by a passion to unite people and create platforms for artists to share their stories, their voices, and their art. This journey is more than just a pursuit – it's a labor of love, fueled by my devotion to my children, my community, and the art that has been my guiding force."
